If you neglect to treat the rust on your Pathfinder, it will continue to grow and degrade the metal until it causes a hole to break through the metal. Once rust has created holes in your Pathfinder, you'll need more serious repairs such as panel replacement. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Masking tape Newspaper Sander Sandpaper Tack cloth Primer Paint Step by Step : 1 Section off the rusted area on your Pathfinder with masking tape. Leave several rust-free inches on each side of the area. Tape newspaper around the area to protect the rest of the vehicle during the rust-removal process. 2 Sand the rusted area using a sander and sandpaper. Use a rough grit during the first sanding to remove as much rust as possible. Sand slightly beyond the rust to ensure that the finish is smooth and all of the rust is removed. 3 Continue sanding the area, using a finer grit of sandpaper. Using a rough grit and then a fine grit will remove the rust and keep the metal smooth. 4 Wipe the area with tack cloth to remove sanding residue once all of the rust is removed. 5 Apply primer to the sanded areas and allow the primer to dry. If you had to remove thickness from the metal, you may need additional coats of primer to build the area up so that it is even with the rest of the vehicle. 6 Paint the primed area with a touch-up paint that matches your Pathfinder, which can be purchased from an automotive supply store or a dealership. Tips & Warnings If rust has already caused holes in the vehicle, you will need more extensive repairs. Take the vehicle to a body shop for professional assistance. Take off all handles, taillights and headlights also. Wash the car thoroughly with soap and water and allow the car proper time to air dry. Blow all dirt and debris from inside the seams around doors and windows out with an air blower. 2 Sand the entire car with 320-grit sandpaper to make it shine. Make sure the car is completely smooth and place painter's tape over the edges of the car and on seams around doors and windows. Don safety goggles and a dust mask and pour grease remover on a paper towel. Apply it to the entire car to remove any gunk. 3 Apply primer to the car with a paint brush, using light even strokes to avoid puddles and dripping. Paint the entire car and allow sufficient time to dry thoroughly. Sand over the entire car with 600-grit sandpaper and allow more drying time. Blow off any dust and debris with the air blower. 4 Fill the paint gun with the desired automotive paint. Plug in the paint gun and pull the lever to begin spraying the car. Work in sections, beginning with the hood, and apply a full coat to the entire car. Allow it time to dry and then apply a second coat. Remove all painter's tape once completed. 5 Wait 48 hours and buff the car with a powered buffer. Plug in the buffer and work in circular motions to polish out the shine. Don't press too hard or the new paint will be removed.
